The beginning of the year is a great time for evaluation and goal-setting for the future, and we’re so glad we all got to get together last month for our January event, Blogging Goals and Brainstorming. This was our second (now annual) event of this type, after our successful January 2013 “Give Your Blog a Buzz in 2013” goal-setting and brainstorming event. In 2013 we worked with version 1 of our free printable blog planner and talked to the whole group about SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-focused) goals, and had a great discussion about challenges and goals for our blogs.
This year, we broke into two groups: those who either attended the event last year or have been blogging and setting goals for a long time, and those who are newer to blogging and haven’t done as much visioning and goal-setting. Then we came back together and talked about shared goals, and then split up into five groups to talk about specific blog goals!
We all worked with pages of the 2014 free printable blog planner, and one lucky blogger won a complete binder!
Some of the key messages the newer blogger group talked about were about content- what the blog is about. They also talked about SMART goals and worked on setting some for the coming year!
The veterans group, of folks who’d been to the 2013 event or were familiar with setting blogging goals, talked more about some victories and challenges they’d come across in working on last year’s goals. For 2014, they talked about goals like cleaning up their blog’s design and links, working with sponsors and guest posting on other blogs more, finding time to prepare and create quality media, growing readership and social media followings, and improving writing quality and efficiency.
Back together again, we talked about our common goals and topics.
Several common topic areas for goals developed, and we split into five groups to work on these areas:
- Networking in the blog world, both worldwide and with other Portland bloggers and companies
- Improving use and quality of graphics and images
- Using social media to grow readership and develop brand
- Working with sponsors and advertisers (monetizing)

Whew! We packed a lot into the event! Saw a lot of great interactions after the fact as well, through our Facebook and Twitter networks, and we love to see bloggers taking what they learned at our events and developing posts or goals outside the group as well. See more photos of the event here.
We’ll do another goal-setting and brainstorming event next January! Until then, let’s get to work on our blogging goals!
